District Attorney Brooke Jenkins Announces Fasi Fotu Convicted of First-Degree Murder

A jury convicted Fasi Fotu of first-degree murder for killing a man in the Bayview District in 2020

San Francisco, CA – Today, San Francisco District Attorney Brooke Jenkins announced that her office secured a first-degree murder conviction of Fasi Fotu, 46, after trial by jury. Fotu killed Michael Hampton, 38, on February 21, 2020, near the intersection of Wallace Street and Ingalls Street in the Bayview District of San Francisco. Fotu shot Mr. Hampton, who was sitting in a parked car, in the back after a brief confrontation. Following the shot, Mr. Hampton drove his car before losing control of the vehicle and crashing near the intersection of Wallace and Ingalls. Responding San Francisco Police officers rendered aid at the scene. Mr. Hampton was pronounced dead shortly after at San Francisco General Hospital. The jury reached a guilty verdict on November 10, 2022.

“Fotu’s unprovoked cold-blooded killing of an unarmed man is chilling,” said District Attorney Brooke Jenkins. “Today’s verdict delivers justice for Mr. Hampton’s family and sends another message that there is no place for gun violence in our community and perpetrators will face consequences.”

The case against Fotu was successfully prosecuted by Assistant District Attorneys Ryan King and Dane Reinstedt with assistance from paralegals Jessica Diamond and Tony Yu as well as intern Ahmanda Lee. Victim Advocates Jovan Thomas, Maria Reynoso, and Ruben Marquez worked closely with the victim’s family throughout the case. Prosecutors were able to develop a strong case against Fotu based on the careful investigation work performed by the San Francisco Police Department’s Homicide investigators with support from Bayview Station.

“The jury’s verdict holds Fotu accountable for the cold and calculated murder of Michael Hampton, Jr, said Ryan King, Assistant District Attorney. “Mr. Hampton will be missed by many.”

“I want to thank the jury for their service and care in reaching this decision, said Dane Reinstedt, Assistant District Attorney. “While nothing can bring Michael Hampton, Jr. back to his family, I hope that this verdict brings them a sense of closure and justice. Our thoughts continue to be with them.”

Fotu has been in custody since his arrest on March 3, 2020. Sentencing will be set at a future date not yet set.
