District Attorney Brooke Jenkins Announces Charges in Castro Hate Crime Attack

San Francisco, CA – Today, San Francisco District Attorney Brooke Jenkins announced charges against Muhammed Abdullah (20) in connection to a hate crime attack in the Castro neighborhood.  Mr. Abdullah is charged with two counts of assault with a deadly weapon (PC 245(a)(1)) with special allegations that these were hate crimes (PC 422.75(a), and misdemeanor battery (PC 242), violation of a person’s civil rights (PC 422.6(a) and petty theft (PC 484(a)).  Mr. Abdullah was arrested by San Francisco Police on June 5, 2023.

Mr. Abdullah was arrested following a brief foot pursuit in the area of 18th Street and Church Street. Officers met with the victims, a 40-year-old male and a 58-year-old male, who stated the unknown male suspect was following them on foot while simultaneously aggressively shouting anti-LGBTQ language. The suspect then threw a glass object at them causing the 40-year-old male victim to sustain a non-life-threatening injury.

“San Francisco is a safe haven for LGBTQ people,” said District Attorney Brooke Jenkins.  “Our city is proud of our diversity and for being an open and welcoming beacon to all people, especially those who have been marginalized elsewhere.  Hate crimes that seek to demean and otherize people because of who they are, what they look like, or who they love are unacceptable and will be prosecuted.”

Mr. Abdullah was arraigned on June 7, 2023, in San Francisco Superior Court.  Prosecutors are seeking pre-trial detention in this case because of the public safety risk he poses. Mr. Abdullah’s next court appearance is scheduled for June 21, 2023, for a preliminary hearing in this case and ruling on the People’s motion to detain.  If convicted of all charges and all allegations are found to be true, Mr. Abdullah faces more than 10 years in State Prison.

Although charges have been filed, this remains an active investigation.  Anyone with information is asked to call the San Francisco Police Department Tip Line at 1-415-575-4444 or Text a Tip to TIP411 and begin the text message with SFPD.  You may remain anonymous.
